Snapdragons

There’s a reason Snapdragons have been garden favorites for generations. They bring tall spikes of color to the garden during the cooler months, make fantastic cut flowers, and they have one little trick that never gets old: gently squeeze the sides of a bloom, and the flower opens and closes like a tiny dragon mouth. 🐲

Here in South Alabama, Snapdragons are especially fun because they give us beautiful color as summer flowers begin to slow down. Plant them in fall and enjoy their upright blooms through our cooler weather. They're beautiful planted in groups in flower beds, tucked behind shorter flowers for height, or used as the taller centerpiece in mixed containers.

We're offering them in Red, Pink, Yellow, and White, so you can stick with one color or mix them for a colorful cottage-garden look.

They’re also excellent cut flowers, so don't be afraid to snip a few stems and bring them inside. Cutting flowers and removing old blooms helps encourage the plant to keep producing more.

🌸 Plant Details

☀️ Light: Full sun is best during the cooler months. As temperatures warm, some       afternoon shade can help extend their season.

📏 Mature Height: Approximately 18–24 inches

↔️ Mature Width: Approximately 8–12 inches

🌸 Bloom Season: Fall through spring in South Alabama, with the best flowering during cool weather

🌿 Growth Habit: Upright with tall flower spikes

🎨 Colors: Red, Pink, Yellow, and White

🪴 Great For: Flower beds, borders, mixed containers, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens

✂️ Cut Flowers: Yes! Their tall stems make beautiful additions to bouquets.

🐝 Pollinators: Snapdragon flowers are especially attractive to larger pollinators like bumblebees that can push their way inside the unique blooms.

💧 Water: Keep the soil evenly moist while plants are establishing. Once established, water when the soil begins to dry rather than keeping it constantly wet.

✂️ Care: Remove spent flower spikes to encourage additional blooms. Regular feeding during the growing season will also help keep them flowering.

🌡️ South Alabama Tip: Snapdragons are cool-season flowers. They love our fall, winter, and spring weather but generally decline once our serious summer heat arrives.

Plant a few where you walk by often. The flowers are beautiful, but we fully expect you to stop and make the little dragon mouths “talk” at least once. 😂
