Paperbush

๐ŸŒผ The Shrub That Waits Until Winter to Show Off

Paperbush is one of those plants that makes you wonder why everybody doesn't grow one.

Through the warmer months, it forms a beautiful rounded shrub with large, almost tropical-looking blue-green leaves. Then fall arrives, the foliage turns yellow and eventually drops... and that's when things get really interesting.

Silvery flower buds hang from the bare branches before opening into clusters of golden-yellow, incredibly fragrant flowers in winter, right when the garden could really use something exciting. The fragrance is often compared to gardenia with a slightly spicy sweetness.

And there's actually a reason it's called Paperbush. Its inner bark has been used to make high-quality paper, including traditional Japanese paper and even banknotes. How cool is that? ๐Ÿ“œ

๐ŸŒฟ Plant Details

๐ŸŒค๏ธ Light: Morning sun with afternoon shade is a great choice, especially in our South Alabama heat.

๐Ÿ“ Mature Height: Approximately 4โ€“7 feet

โ†”๏ธ Mature Width: Approximately 4โ€“7 feet

๐ŸŒผ Bloom Time: Winter into early spring

๐Ÿ’› Flowers: Clusters of golden-yellow, sweetly fragrant blooms

๐ŸŒฟ Growth Habit: Rounded, multi-branched deciduous shrub

๐Ÿ‚ Foliage: Blue-green leaves during the growing season with yellow fall color before dropping for winter

๐Ÿ’ง Water: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Don't let it stay soggy.

๐ŸŒฑ Soil: Does best in rich soil with plenty of organic matter and good drainage.

๐Ÿก Great For: Woodland-style gardens, shaded borders, specimen plantings, winter gardens, and planting near a walkway or patio where you can actually enjoy the fragrance.

โœ‚๏ธ Pruning: Usually needs very little pruning. If necessary, prune after flowering because the flowers form on older growth.

Paperbush doesn't try to compete with everything blooming in spring.

It waits until winter when it practically has the garden to itself. ๐ŸŒผ
